“We think it’s the perfect time to answer fans’ excitement and give them an unforgettable concert experience from the comfort of their local movie theatres. But call it what you will, for a brief moment it seemed that rock n roll would inherit the earth. Depending on your point of view it was either the high point in the history of the cosmo or a period of mass hallucination (or both). “We are thrilled to share the incredible The Rolling Stones Rock and Roll Circus with moviegoers and music fans for this limited engagement,” said Darryl Schaffer, executive vice president of operations and exhibitor relations, Screenvision Media. 'The Rolling Stones Rock and Roll Circus' captures the delirious optimism of an era. The film has been restored from the original 35mm internegative with new Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos sound. The Rolling Stone Rock and Roll Circus is also the only time Tony Iommi of Black Sabbath performed with Jethro Tull, and the last time Brian Jones would perform with The Rolling Stones in front of an audience. This featured a lot of their British Invasion peers, as well as a lot of performances from the band themself, unsurprisingly. This performance marks the first musical concert in which John Lennon performed before an audience outside The Beatles, as part of supergroup The Dirty Mac, which also included music legends Eric Clapton, Keith Richards, and Mitch Mitchell. In 1968, The Rolling Stones organised this little event, drawing some of the most popular and legendary recording artists of the time to perform in a two part concert- called 'Rock and Roll Circus'. Some of the footage was thought to have been destroyed but was found in vaults of The Who in 1993. The film was abandoned and remained unreleased until Lindsay-Hogg decided to attempt to edit the footage in 1992. It was directed by Michael Lindsay-Hogg who later made The Beatles ‘Let It Be’ movie. The Rolling Stones Rock and Roll Circus was filmed on 11 December 1968. The Rolling Stones Rock and Roll Circus will be screened in cinemas across the USA on April 1.
